Description

317L Stainless Steel Wire

The Crazy Wire Company are long established as Europe’s preferred suppliers of top quality 317L stainless steel wire. We have enormous stock levels at all times, as we use this wire to weave our marine grade woven mesh products.

Our delightful staff are experts in producing our spools of round wire on our 6 rapid action winding machines. All spools are produced to carry a little extra length to make up for any waste when handling the product.

We specialise in fulfilling high volumes of smaller wire spools to suit every requirement and budget. However our master spools weigh between 1kg and 15kgs, so please get in touch with our sales team if you require any assistance.

Because we produce our own spools we are able to offer a wide choice of AWG options from immediate stock. We are also able to guarantee the best prices in Europe.

Specification of Wire:

  • Diameter – 0.38mm (380 Micron – 27AWG)
  • Ohms/ft – 7.14

What Else Is Available?

Not only do we offer 304 grade stainless steel wire, but we also stock huge levels of SS316, SS430 (magnetic) and SS317L.

We also offer stainless steel in ribbon and flat wire options.

The choice is virtually endless!

Stainless Steel Wire

SS317L is a low-carbon, molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel. It has ohms/improved resistance compared to SS304 and SS316 grades of stainless steel.

The AISI 317 stainless steel and the 317L stainless steel are both austenitic stainless steel grades containing molybdenum (Mo). Carbon content, weldability, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are the main differences between 317 and 317L stainless steel. As stainless steel 317L has a lower carbon content than stainless steel 317, it makes welding of 317L stainless steel easier than welding stainless steel 317.

In applications requiring maximum corrosion resistance and annealing after welding, SS317L is an excellent choice.

We have a full range of SS317L wire available from immediate stock.

317 vs 316 Stainless Steel Wire

317 stainless steel wire is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, while 316 stainless steel wire is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The main difference between 317 and 316 stainless steel is that 317 has higher molybdenum content, resulting in improved corrosion resistance, particularly in more aggressive environments. 316 stainless steel has better overall corrosion resistance and is generally considered more versatile than 317 stainless steel.

What Are The Uses?

317 stainless steel wire is typically used in applications that require excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in environments that contain chlorides or other strong oxidizing agents. Some common uses for 317 stainless steel wire include:

  1. Marine environments: This type of steel is resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it ideal for use in marine environments.
  2. Chemical processing: 317 stainless steel wire can withstand exposure to a wide range of chemicals, making it suitable for use in chemical processing applications.
  3. Food and beverage industry: Due to its corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures, 317 stainless steel wire is often used in food and beverage processing equipment.
  4. Pharmaceuticals: 317 stainless steel wire is often used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals due to its non-toxic properties and resistance to corrosion.
  5. Pulp and paper industry: This steel is also used in the production of pulps, papers and papersboard due to its corrosion resistance and strength.
  6. Power generation: 317 stainless steel wire is also used in power generation facilities, as it can withstand high temperatures and exposure to corrosive environments.
  7. Industrial machinery: Due to its corrosion resistance and strength, 317 stainless steel wire is often used in industrial machinery and heavy equipment.

SS317L Stainless Steel

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is naturally high, however corrosion can still occur in harsh or aggressive environments, including salt water and marine environments. The resistance of stainless steel can be attributed to the formation of a protective coating of chromium oxide on its surface, protecting the base metal (and, most importantly, the iron present) from moisture exposure and preventing the formation of rust or iron oxide.

Due to the inclusion of molybdenum in their composition, 317 or 317L are one of the most commonly used stainless steel grades for marine applications. Stainless steels 316 and 304 contain molybdenum, however, it is the relatively high concentration (2.0 to 2.5%) present in these grades that prevent pitting and crevice corrosion caused by salt water. Consequently, 317L is a higher cost metal than the equivalent 304 grade.

We have an unrivalled range of 304 grade stainless steel wire too if required.
